Routines = Recovery

The holidays are officially over, so why is it that you’re feeling totally exhausted still? Even if you took some time off during the holidays, it’s really not a time for rest. In fact, it’s for most people more chaotic than the everyday schedule typically is.

That’s why I like to think of the month of January is more of that time for recovery and rejuvenation.

But you’re probably already back to your work routine. However, you’re probably not back into other routines. And that’s one of my big tips.

Get back into routines that’ll actually help you recover, mentally and physically.

Now look, I am notorious for routines – ask anyone in my family. But I haven’t always had a routine for everything. When I was in my corporate job, there were days that I had to wake up at 3:00 a.m. to catch a 6:00 a.m. flight, and then another day where I could sleep in until 6:00, because I worked from home. So for over a decade, I didn’t have a routine for everything, but I made sure I had a routine for the things that would give me the most energy, both mentally and physically. And that’s a couple of things I want to share with you today.

So first, how’s your sleep going? The holidays completely throw off your sleep cycle; you’re up later, you’re sleeping in more if you took time off. So are you getting back into a more regular pattern of sleep, making sure that you’re getting at least seven hours?

Now let’s talk about your diet: food and water. I hope you indulge during the holidays; I hope you ate all the things that you absolutely love, and that you drink the things you love. I am right there with you.  But now it’s time to start treating our bodies in a clean way; getting those fresh vegetables and whole foods, and drinking lots of water.

And then finally, my favorite, exercise. Making sure you’re building in an exercise routine, whether that routine is that you have a same day, same time, or the same type of exercise or the same group that you go with – whatever the routine is, it doesn’t mean that you have to work out every day at the same time, just have some sort of routine based upon your schedule, your needs, making sure that you’re getting that movement in as often as possible throughout the week.

Sleeping, eating and drinking water, and the exercise; getting those routines built back in as quickly as possible are really going to help you recover mentally and physically to kick off the new year.
