It’s Not About Masculine vs. Feminine

I was observing a debrief at the end of a leadership workshop, and one of the participants shared that she often gets feedback that she’s too masculine. This brought up an entire conversation around masculine versus feminine energy. And she was saying that she doesn’t understand what masculine looks like.

How can I be more feminine? She couldn’t put her finger on it, she couldn’t identify it – and I’m not surprised.

Because it really isn’t about masculine versus feminine energy. It’s more around who you are, your strengths, identifying those strengths, owning them, and allowing that confidence to shine through so that you can step into your power. When we think about the best presenters, communicators, leaders, we think of the phrase “executive presence,” right?

We know that that’s one of the kind of intangibles – we just see this executive presence. And so I encourage you, take a moment, picture a strong female leader, and would you say, “Oh, I know they’re strong because they’ve got such masculine energy.” What does that even mean? We don’t use that phrase when we really identify who those strong female leaders are.

Instead, we see that executive presence. So today, instead of trying to figure out your specific masculine or feminine energy or trying to be somebody else or something else out there, I encourage you to find your strengths, step into that power, and just show up as you. Be you, because it’s not about choosing the right energy, it’s about owning yours.
