Just quit! I’m actually telling you to quit. I’m not telling you to quit your job, your workout routine, your family, your health, your dreams, or your aspirations. I AM telling you though, to quit anything and everything that is pulling you away from all of those things I just mentioned. Whatever is pulling your time, your money, your energy, any of those resources, whatever is depleting you of those, whatever is causing distraction, pulling you away from your career, from your family, from your dreams, your vision, I am telling you to quit those now.
I served on the Southern California committee of an association, a networking group that I was a part of. It was a big national group for women who worked in the industry that I worked in for over a decade. And for the few years that I served on that committee, it was wonderful; I met some amazing women, not just in my chapter, but in the other chapters nationally. It was a great platform for me as well, for personal development.
I got a lot out of it, but after a few years and some adjustments in where my vision was going and my aspirations, where I wanted to start spending more time with my family, or I wanted to start sleeping more. I had to evaluate, was being a part of that committee really serving where I wanted to go in my future now, at that point in time? It certainly did in the years prior, which is why I was there – but I had to reevaluate.
Part of it was that I didn’t ever want to say, “I’m quitting,” – I felt so bad. I make commitments, and I wanted to stay there until indefinitely. I didn’t want to feel like I was abandoning my fellow committee members, or abandoning an important initiative in my industry, supporting women. But when I really, really got down to it, that committee, using my resources for that, was not serving where I wanted, and in many cases needed to go in the future. So I had to very respectfully quit being on that committee.
Take a look, where do you want to go? What are you missing in your life? What do you wish you had right now? What do you wish you could be doing right now? Then take a look at everything you are doing, everything that is pulling resources from you, and ask yourself, are they all serving where you want to be moving forward? And if not, I am giving you permission today to put into action your plan to quit.
You have my permission to take care of yourself. When you take care of yourself, when you understand what’s important, what’s healthy, what’s needed for you, then everyone else around you will benefit. So today, spend even just five minutes asking yourself those preliminary questions about where you want to go next, and what are you doing now to get there? And is there alignment, does it seem to be serving you? If not, put the plan together, and let’s quit! Let’s use those resources in a way that will support you moving forward, instead of holding you back in the past.
