Staying the Course in Uncertainty

I come into the office early in the morning to see the blinking light on my phone. Yep, it’s a message from our CEO telling us that he’s leaving. And over the course of the eleven years that I was with that organization, we went through four CEOs.

And every single time we had a new one come in, somebody would be in full-blown panic mode, freaking out, like, “What’s going to happen to my job, what’s going to happen tomorrow, what’s going to happen in ten years?” And we certainly didn’t know; we didn’t know what was going to happen to the organization, much less our own individual roles.

And I know right now, you are going through a world of change, certainly in your personal life. But thinking about you professionally, there is so much unknown, so much uncertainty in the future. And so how do you deal with that? How do you get your team on board, how do you help manage yourself?

I’d like to offer that right now, when there’s so much uncertainty; like it’s so foggy, you can’t even see like five feet in front of you. That when it’s like this, times like this, to focus your energy less on the future and more on today.

During these crazy times of uncertainty, focus on today.

Coming in and saying, “What am I working on today? What are my projects, what are even my tasks I need to do? And, can I just do good work today?”

And certainly, if you are a leader, that’s what you should be helping your team navigate; asking them, “What good work could you do today?” Helping them literally one day at a time, focusing their energy on just, hey, I don’t know what’s necessarily going to happen tomorrow, but how can I show up and give everything I’ve got to today?

At the end of the day, we can all ask ourselves, “Am I better today than I was yesterday?”

And that’s about as much as we can do, unless you are running the organization. If you are more at somebody else’s mercy, control, what they’re dictating, really what you can do is say, “How can I show up today and do my best work?” So I offer that.

Comment below, where are you going to show up? Where are you going to do your best work today? What does that look like? I’m here to help you live that successful and fulfilling personal life, until next time!
